Why Should Empty-Nesters Consider Dundas?

Share This Post:

Watching the youngest of your children move out of your family home can leave you with mixed feelings. On the one hand, you couldn’t be prouder. They are off to begin their own life adventure, all thanks to the support and love you’ve provided over the years.

On the other hand, your large family home now feels quiet and empty. Though it’s full of precious memories, it can feel bittersweet to remain in the home as-is.

At this stage in life, many people are ready for a change. Often, that means a change in scenery by starting over in a new town or city. If you’re an empty nester or will be soon, there are many reasons why you might want to set your sights on Dundas.

A Haven of Natural Beauty

Located between the western edge of Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment, Dundas is filled with rich scenery and so much natural beauty that it has earned the nickname “Valley Town.” With much of its land protected, the beautiful parks and green spaces are here to stay.

It isn’t just majestic, mature trees and lush foliage, either. Dundas is also home to several breathtaking waterfalls and bubbling creeks that provide some of the best hiking experiences in the province. Dundas Conservation Area, Tiffany Falls, and Cascades Park are just a few of the natural wonders that you must see. If you have a day with a few hours to spare, Webster’s Falls is well worth a visit. The stunning view over the towering 22-metre waterfall will take your breath away!

You don’t have to take time out of your day to enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of nature in Dundas, however. The streets themselves are lined with mature trees, and many of the homes have lovingly landscaped gardens that are a pleasure to behold. Thus, a simple walk around the block can feel like a nature retreat.

A Blast From the Past

Are you a history buff? Then you will feel right at home in Dundas, a town that celebrates its rich heritage every day. Even a casual lunch or dinner at a local pub can feel like a journey back in time! For example, Collins Brewhouse has been a Dundas fixture for over 200 years, and is still a great place to gather and celebrate with friends, especially during patio season.

For a more official look at the fascinating history of Dundas, you can always spend an afternoon at The Dundas Museum & Archives, Griffin House National Historic Site, or Fieldcote Memorial Park & Museum.

Dundas is part of the City of Hamilton, which you can learn more about in the posts below:

A Safe and Welcoming Community

As a quiet, affluent community, Dundas is one of the safest places you’ll find anywhere in Hamilton, Halton, or the GTA. Areavibes rates the town as extremely safe, where residents feel comfortable walking alone at any time, day or night.

In fact, with a crime rate 73% below the national average, it’s easy to make the case that Dundas is one of the best places to be in all of Canada. For downsizers or empty-nesters, it’s a safe and supportive community where you can enjoy your life and go about your day with confidence.

Access to World-Class Amenities

Small towns are often associated with less convenience and fewer services. In Dundas, the opposite is true, and you’ll enjoy a wide array of world-class amenities right at your fingertips.

First and foremost, Dundas offers excellent healthcare, with a variety of clinics and practitioners conveniently located right in town. In addition, McMaster Children’s Hospital is less than 10 minutes away in Westdale. Though they specialize in pediatric care, the facility is open to everyone.

As part of the City of Hamilton, Dundas residents enjoy excellent public transportation through the HSR. If proposed rapid routes are approved, access could soon extend right through to Market Square, making it even easier to travel to Ancaster, Hamilton, or Burlington.

Unlimited Recreational Opportunities

If you love shopping, dining, and exciting recreational activities, you won’t have to travel very far. You’ll find over 100 unique shops and restaurants along the streets in the vibrant downtown core, many of which are located in historic 19th-century buildings.

Dundas is also home to numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including the highly-anticipated Buskerfest and the Cactus Festival. If you’re downsizing but don’t want to miss out on the best that life has to offer, Dundas may just be the perfect blend of culture, recreation, and beautiful scenery to fill your days.
