Top 5 Hamilton Neighbourhoods for Families

Share This Post:

When the City of Hamilton comes to mind, you might think of “Steeltown Pride,” where residents are known for their grit and resilience. Since Dofasco is one of the top employers in Ontario, this association is understandable. Hamiltonians are proud of our reputation that is so well deserved. That, however, is only one tiny part of the incredible City of Hamilton.

Ask anyone who lives here, and they could talk for hours about the hiking trails, the waterfalls, and the stunning natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment. Then there’s the music and art scene that easily rivals Toronto’s even though ours gets less attention. And, of course, let’s not forget about the delectable and diverse dining options and exciting new events rolling into town like clockwork.

All of this makes for a lively and exciting lifestyle, while excellent schools draw many new residents to the city. There’s a lot more to Hamilton than meets the eye, and that’s why it’s quickly becoming a primo destination for people all over the province. What are some of our top neighbourhoods for families? Here is a closer look at a few of our favourites.

Mountview is a family-friendly neighbourhood bordered by Scenic Drive, Mohawk Road, and Sanitorium Road. With spectacular views of the Niagara Escarpment, or as Hamiltonians affectionately call it, “The Mountain,” it’s one of the most scenic areas in the city. The neighbourhood children are delighted to find playgrounds and parks all around where they can run, play, jump, and shout until their heart’s content. For outdoor lovers, the Chedoke Radial Trail is nearby, where you will encounter happy cyclists and hikers all year long.

This quiet residential area is one of the most peaceful neighbourhoods in Hamilton but is also highly convenient, with easy access to Highway 403 and public transit. Downtown is a quick car ride away. Or you could even cycle down on a beautiful afternoon.

The real estate landscape consists of mainly of detached homes, split levels, bungalows, spacious two-storey houses and the occasional townhouse. Though many of these dwellings are older, they are meticulously well-kept and regal looking.

Parents of young children will be thrilled about the options for high-quality schools. Mountview Elementary School (JK to 6), Chedoke Elementary School (7,8), and Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School(9-12) are close at hand. Norwood Park Elementary School and (1-8), Sherwood Secondary School (9-12) provide access to French Immersion programs. If you prefer a Catholic education, St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Elementary School (JK to 8), Bishop Tonnos Secondary School (9-12) are available. You can even find options for Catholic and French immersion, including St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School (SK-4), Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Elementary School (5-8), and Cathedral High School (9-12).

And those who prefer a private education have convenient access to Hillfield Strathallan College, a progressive facility that accepts students from Montessori Toddler programs right through to Grade 12.

With a number of new construction infill projects in development, Westcliffe is the perfect place to be for a blend of old-world charm and modern elegance. A little east of Mountview, this neighbourhood also provides fabulous views of the Niagara Escarpment, along with the incredible outdoor adventures it brings.

Fun fact: If you stand on the edge of the escarpment, you can see the bustling North Hamilton area amid the backdrop of Lake Ontario. You will often find people strolling along while stopping to take pictures of the incredible scenery as they go. If you’re looking for a way to get some exercise while enjoying nature, the Chedoke stairs are a fantastic option to explore the escarpment. You can venture all the way from Westcliffe to the Kirkendall neighbourhood and the Chedoke Golf Club in the lower city. But Westcliffe is about more than just outdoor activities and beautiful greenery.

You’ll also enjoy easy access to amenities like recreational centres, stores and boutiques, restaurants, and more! You may live in a quiet, peaceful area full of nature and tranquillity, but that doesn’t mean you’ll ever experience a dull moment.

Your housing options are varied, and you’ll find something to suit every budget, including smaller bungalows, 1.5 storey homes or split-levels. The closer you get to Scenic Drive, the larger the homes are. Some of these spacious houses sit right on the edge of the escarpment overlooking the city!

For families who value education above all else, Holbrook Elementary School (JK to 6) or Chedoke Elementary School (JK to 8) are available, depending on your catchment area, and Sir Allan MacNab (9-12) is a high quality secondary school in the neighbourhood. Your French immersion options are Norwood Park (1-8) and Sherwood Secondary School (9-12). For those who prefer a Catholic education, you can choose Regina Mundi Catholic Elementary School (JK to 8) or St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School (9-12). Peter & Paul Catholic Elementary School (5 to 8), and Cathedral High School (9 to 12). And if you prefer a private alternative, never fear! Hillfield Strathallan College is just moments away.

Excitement and the peaceful beauty of nature are not two things that people often associate together. However, both are what you get in the Kirkendall neighbourhood, located “down the mountain” between Highway 403 and Queen Street.

Here, you’ll find the beautiful Highland Park Gardens and the Chedoke Golf Course, with fabulous hiking trails up and down the escarpment. And, of course, we can’t forget about Locke Street, one of Hamilton’s most famous attractions! You can spend a day popping in and out of the unique shops and boutiques. And there is no shortage of options whenever you feel the need for refreshments. Gourmet coffee shops, pubs, and more await you.

Dog lovers also rejoice because there are many pet-friendly patios where you and your beloved four-legged friend can sit down and enjoy a meal together. But beware, your pup might be spoiled by the lavish attention of lovable strangers.

Kirkendall isn’t just a happening neighbourhood for those who love the hustle and bustle of vibrant city life. It’s also a fantastic place for children, with parks, playgrounds, and splash pads galore where they can shake and bounce their jitters out.

Neighbourhood schools include Earl Kitchener Elementary School, Kanétskare Elementary School, and Westdale Secondary School. Catholic options include St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School (JK to 8), St. Mary Catholic Secondary School (9-12), or Cathedral High School (9-12) for French Immersion.  Lyonsgate Montessori is an excellent private option to give children aged 18 months to 12 years a head start in life.

The combination of trendiness, convenience, and beauty makes Kirkendall one of Hamilton’s most sought-after neighbourhoods for families and investors. The real estate landscape consists of a wide mix of older homes, some small, some majestic, and many of which have been sectioned off into multiple units. One thing is for sure: Houses for sale in Kirkendall never stay on the market for long!
